Prelude: Introducing an updated Foundry Version 3 line new for 2023! These updated pedals will incorperate new features we explored during the Limited runs of 2022 and some fun custom shop options. Probably most notably each pedal in the Foundry Verison 3 series will have either an inductor based EQ or a transformer option, harnessing the power of real analog magnetics! In a digital world of emulation we are diving deeper into bringing authentic analog Tools for Tone to your rig, with even more depth, warmth, character and dimentional feel that only real magnetic saturation can give. These tools naturally pair well with any tube amp rig but also add a new realm of analog goodness to any hybrid or digital emulation rig!

IRON V3
The Pettyjohn IRON Version 3 is a cullmination of nearly nine years of exprimenting with different ways of optimizing our IRON circuit orginally issued in the PettyDrive V1. We have crammed all of our favorite stock settings into the base unit and added some new upgrades to the custom shop options!
 
WARM AMERICAN TONES
The IRON Version 3 is all about that cranked thick american amp sound with some new features borrowed from the the limited runs of the STEEL, SILVER and even a feature borrowed from the M*A*S*H! Features include a three-way toggle that incorperates our top three favorite soft clippers, arranged in the feedback loop of an authentic JRC4558 running at +/-18v for 36 volts of headroom! We kept the clean mix function that makes the IRON a favorite for pedal stackers and redisgned the PCB to allow us to update the features and include an optionional studio-grade, USA made Iron core transformer for even more authentic amp-like saturation, weight and feel!
 
MAGNETICS
We all love the sound and feel of a tube amp cranked to the edge of breakup. This point is called saturation or where the circuit begins to become non-linear. A large part of this effect in amps is due to the transfromer being pushed into saturation by the tube output stage. The "power amp" sag and saturation and comression often largely is coming from the output transfromer between the tubes and speaker being punished into its edge of opperation. Our ears like this zone, as the "soft clipping" that happens from a trasnfromer is harmonically rich and these harmonics add life and size to the tone. Unfortunately due to there size and cost and power requirements pedals generally speaking do not have transformers in them (save a few boutique pedals that have experimented in recent years). Since the transformer saturation is such a big part of the pushed American tube amp sound we have decided to include a transformer option on the IRON Version 3. This USA made iron core transformer adds some subtle color and will saturate more as the pedal is pushed.

FILTERING
One of the biggest features that draws user crtisism of most pedals with this sort of topology is the built in EQ or "filtering" often used to filter out extra lows or harsh highs often associated with this stype of clipping. Problem is these filters created a preset EQ that doesnt always work. Our approach from the beginning was to strip out all of that preset filtering and make the circuit truly full range and then design an EQ that gave all of that control to shape the tone back to the user! Our LOWS control is pre-gain stage can effectively re-create any low end profile of any 4558 style pedal or extend deep into the sub range for those who want to use it with bass or keys or even drums! Our HIGHS control sweeps from 20Khz down to 1Khz and is post gain and clipping so it effectively tames high end to match any gain level or amp/guitar combo. For example, the standard TS-9 circuit has built in filtering equivalent to the LOWS and HIGHS knobs being at about 75% cut, so with this set up there is so much recovery sonic information often lost to built in filtering. This is particularly useful with lower gain settings making transprent, full range edge of breakup tones much richer and amp like without all the built in EQ.
 
HIGHS CAP MOD: The IRON V3 ships with an authentic 716 series Orange Drop capacitor in the HIGHS circuit. Recently we have experimented with more exotic caps and found the Emerson Custom Oil-in-paper cap to be our favorite but they are handmade in the USA and the cost reflects the quality so we offer it as a custom shop mod for $29
 
OUR FAVORITE THREE CLIPPING FLAVORS
So, we have opted to include our three all time favorite clipping circuits to this pedal. TS style symetrical clipping is voiced with special NOS diodes (Included stock) chosen for smoothness and great lowend with musical harmonic content for the best TS style drive you ever played. The OD1 setting is asymetrical silicon clipping that can be upgraded with the NOS diodes found in the most sought after orginal Boss OD-1 as a custom shop mod. Some people think this is more open and tube amp like with a difference harmonic structure, we love it and it was a no brainer to include in theof the IRON V3. In the middle position of the CLIP toggle switch you get our LED clipping with carefully selected LED array from the SILVER Limited pedal, loved for their amplike punch and musical saturation curve. The LED setting is aurguably the most "american amp-like" setting in this pedal but the other clipping settings provide instantly recognisable classic warm overdrive tones that round out the IRON V3 sonic pallet.
 
NOS OD-1 Clipping Mod: Upgrade the OD1 asymetrical clipping section to NOS Toshiba 1S1588 diodes found in the original late 70's Boss OD-1.
