CHIME3
The Pettyjohn CHIME3 is a culmination of nearly eleven years of experimenting with different ways of optimizing our CHIME circuit originally issued in the PettyDrive V1. Generally speaking the CHIME is focused on clean to low gain overdrive tones. It excels at "edge of breakup" saturated tones and many players use it as an always on base tone. We have crammed all of our favorite stock settings into the base unit and added some new upgrades to the custom shop options!
 
CLASSIC CRANKED BRITISH AMP CHIME
The CHIME3 is all about that pushed Vox/Matchless sound. Everyone knows that the name of the game with these classic British AC style amps is cranking them to the sweet spot on the edge of breakup. The CHIME3 explores the full range of saturation and tone sweetening you would turn to these amps for! The CHIME is our overall best selling circuit and we are excited to offer this new version with ALL the bells and whistles we have ever wanted!
 
MAGNETIC TRANSFORMER MOJO
We all love the sound and feel of a tube amp cranked to the edge of breakup. This point is called saturation or where the circuit begins to become non-linear. A large part of this effect in amps is due to the transformer being pushed into saturation by the tube output stage. The "power amp" sag and saturation and compression often largely is coming from the output transformer between the tubes and speaker being punished into its edge of linear operation. Our ears like this zone, as the "soft clipping" that happens from a transformer is harmonically rich and these harmonics add life and size to the tone. Unfortunately due to there size and cost and power requirements pedals generally speaking do not have transformers in them (save a few boutique pedals that have experimented in recent years). Since the transformer saturation is such a big part of the pushed AC style amp sound we have decided to include a transformer in the CHIME Version 3. The stock transformer is a USA made steel core transformer, which adds some subtle warmth color and will saturate more as the pedal is pushed. We really like the Cinemag transformer from our direct boxes in this pedal, but being a premium transformer, its offered as a custom shop upgrade for an additional $50. 
 
Please note: The transformer is set up for analog flavor and in this pedal it is not intended to be a balanced direct box.
 
NEW INDUCTOR MIDS
The CHIME3 is the first CHIME to ever have a change to the EQ circuit, now we are adding our favorite Inductor Mids bell filter for ultra musical mid range sculpting beyond anything ever offered before in the CHIME! 
 
LED CLIPPING (LIGHT EMITTING DIODES)
The general consensus from customers on all versions of the CHIME is LED is king. Those who were lucky enough to snag a ROYAL Limited in 2022 have further confirmed this so we have decided to major on this by moving to a switch that selects either the original yellow LED or the blue LED's from the Royal. The middle of this LED way switch will select a new ultra high headroom UV clipping OR Preamp mode, which bypasses the clipping all together, switchable via an internal switch. This turns the CHIME V3 into a preamp/boost/tone shaper preamp pedal with loads of level and mojo on tap! The trademark of LED clipping is the high headroom, nearly 4 times higher then the average silicon diode, so there is better bass response and a great punchy saturation like curve on the edge of breakup.
 
Germanium Clipping!
For to those who may want the germanium low headroom clipping, we have included a second clipping switch with the two original germanic clipping modes from the CHIME V1! These are NOS soviet made germanium diodes specially selected for musicality in this circuit. 
 
GAIN & PRE BOOST Gain Staging
So this pedal started as a AC-30 style amp in a box pedal, and the Boost control came into being with the Foundry V1 Chime, to pay homage to the Top Boost on the original amps. It is a pre-gain boost circuit that increases the presence and juice of the signal before it goes into the GAIN and then clipping circuit. The GAIN knob is voiced to add a bit of warmth as you add gain, so it works a bit counter to the PRE BOOST control, making a wide range of subtle but fun tonal changes depending on how you stack these two controls. We recommend experimentation! The Pre Boost in the CHIME3 is before the transformer as well, so if you have it on you can use it to drive the transformer into saturation! 
 
TILT EQ and LOW CUT... A PERFECT PAIR
The CHIME has always sported an interesting tone stack, a TILT EQ and a LOW CUT that is pre-gain. These two simple tone controls play off each other to create nearly any desirable curve! Furthermore, the TILT eq, while being a very simplistic one knob solution to a tone knob, just sounds great and contributes greatly to the "CHIMEY" sound of the CHIME. Powered by a pair of Orange Drop caps and an authentic JRC4558, this vintage EQ is flat when the control is at noon and then cuts lows while boosting highs gently as you turn it to the right, a sea-saw or tilting of the frequency spectrum around a 1K center point. As you turn the TILT knob left of noon, it becomes darker by boosting lows and cutting highs. The LOWS control can then be used to tighten up the sub playing against the lows boost and effectively creating a high cut effect. This is a fun set of tone controls that take just a few minutes to get use to and then its easy peasy and oh so glassy! We still love it so much it hasnt changed since the inception of this pedal almost a decade ago.
 
MAXIMIZE POTENTIAL AT 36 VOLTS
Pettyjohn has long been using a proprietary 36-volt dual rail power supply, which gives us the ability to run Discrete Opamps but also the added benefit is the other opamps run at absolute maximum headroom. When you increase voltage you increase the headroom which then affects the tone and feel of a pedal. Dual rail power supplies are usually found only in classic studio gear, but is part of our vision to bring studio-grade electronics and sonic performance to the pedal board. The FOUNDRY Series charge pump delivers up to a massive four times the headroom of most guitar pedals. This high headroom imparts an openness and 3D quality that is unique to Pettyjohn pedals.
