IRON3
The Pettyjohn IRON3 is a culmination of nearly 11 years of experimenting with different ways of optimizing our IRON circuit originally issued in the PettyDrive V1. The IRON3 is a simple soft clipping circuit based around the classic JRD4558 chip we all know and love but its been modified to high heaven over the years to become its own thing. We have crammed all of our favorite stock settings into the base unit and added some new upgrades to the custom shop options!
 
WARM AMERICAN TONES
The IRON3 is all about that thick, smooth, cranked American amp sound and picks up where the IRON V3 left off (limited run from 3 years ago) .  We are continuing our Pettyjohn Cubed series trend with specialty magnetics incorporated into the IRON3, including a US made, studio grade iron core transformer, bypass-able via the rear push button switch, for that transformer goodness only a real transformer can provide. Also, our favorite EQ, the INDUCTOR MIDS band has been re-voiced and optimized with the IRON3 circuit to provide a different mid range profile and texture then our other CUBED pedals! In fact each CUBED pedal features a different voicing and often a different inductor so each of them can stack without being redundant! Other features include a pair of 3 way toggles for selecting a vast array of clipping options arranged in the feedback loop of an authentic JRC4558 running at +/-18v for 36 volts of headroom! We also kept the clean mix function and further optimized it, a favorite feature of the IRON that makes it a favorite for pedal stackers!
 
MAGNETICS
We all love the sound and feel of a tube amp cranked to the edge of breakup. This point is called saturation or where the circuit begins to become non-linear. A large part of this effect in amps is due to the transformer being pushed into saturation by the tube output stage. The "power amp" sag and saturation and compression often largely is coming from the output transformer between the tubes and speaker being punished into its edge of linear operation levels. Our ears like this zone, as the "soft clipping" that happens from a transformer is harmonically rich and these harmonics add life and size to the tone. Unfortunately due to there size and cost and power requirements pedals generally speaking do not have transformers in them (save a few boutique pedals that have experimented in recent years). Since the transformer saturation is such a big part of the pushed American tube amp sound we have decided to include a transformer in EVERY IRON3 with a switch to easily bypass it should it add to much color for your particular rig. This USA made iron core transformer adds some subtle color and will saturate more as the pedal is pushed.
 
TRANSFORMER
Every IRON3 ships with an iron core transformer installed stock! More-over, you can bypass it without opening the pedal via a small recessed push button switch on the rear of the pedal. We expect most users to prefer the Transformer in most of time, as it adds a warmth and depth to the tone that is often missing from overdrive pedals. Push the level a bit and hear it begin to saturate even more! Pairs wonderfully with amp modelers, profilers or any real amp rig! 
 
Please note: The transformer is set up for analog flavor and in this pedal it is not intended to be a balanced direct box.
 
INDUCTOR MIDS
Magnetic magic in the mids! Utilizing a Red Fasel Inductor for a warm, almost vocal like highlighting of the mid range that is un-equaled by any other type of circuit. The high quality inductor adds energy and resonance while boosting that makes the tone just come to life lifting your notes through the densest mix.
 
FILTERING
One of the biggest features that draws user criticism of most pedals with this sort of topology is the built in EQ or "filtering" often used to filter out extra lows or harsh highs often associated with this style of clipping. Problem is these filters created a preset EQ that doesn't always work. Our approach from the beginning was to strip out all of that preset filtering and make the circuit truly full range and then design an EQ that gave all of that control to shape the tone back to the user! Our LOWS control is pre-gain stage can effectively re-create any low end profile of any 4558 style pedal or extend deep into the sub range for those who want to use it with bass or keys or even drums! Our HIGHS control sweeps from 20Khz down to 1Khz and is post gain and clipping so it effectively tames high end to match any gain level or amp/guitar combo. For example, the standard TS-9 circuit has built in filtering equivalent to the LOWS and HIGHS knobs being at about 75% cut, so with this set up there is so much recovery sonic information often lost to built in filtering. This is particularly useful with lower gain settings making transparent, full range edge of breakup tones much richer and amp like without all the built in EQ.
 
CLEAN MIX
The IRON3 is our only drive with a clean mix feature. The CLEAN LEVEL mini pot adjusts the level of the parallel clean tone into the signal after the overdrive circuit. This can be great for those who want to just add a little dirt to their signal without changing the overall sonic character or eq. It also makes the IRON3 supremely good at stacking with drives in front of it! 
 
MAX MOJO MOD
Upgrade the IRON3 to maximum boutique status with the new MAX MOJO MOD. This includes rare NOS Allen&Bradley carbon comp resistors placed strategically in the signal path for maximum warmth and light transient smoothing.  The IRON V3 ships with an authentic 716 series Orange Drop capacitor in the HIGHS circuit. Recently we have experimented with more exotic caps and found the Emerson Custom Oil-in-paper cap to be our favorite but they are handmade in the USA and the cost reflects the quality so we offer it as a part of this custom shop mod.

So, we have opted to include our 5 all time favorite clipping circuits to this pedal plus PreAmp Mode!  
 
SYM: Activates the Symmetrical silicon diode clipping array, now based on the famous Blues Breaker Symmetrical Array, which offers 2x the headroom of the Tube Scream style. We include upgraded NOS diodes for the smoothest BB style drive you ever heard!
 
ASYM: Activates our classic asymmetrical array of silicon diodes, based loosely on the OD-1 but with some NOS upgrades!
 
LED: Activates the LED clipping switch, which has BLUE, RED or Preamp mode.
 
PREAMP MODE: Bypasses the clipping all together!
